Solar electricity competitive to power from gas
Solar thermal electricity was contracted in 2017 in Dubai for 7.3 $cents/kWh. This plant will combine a 200 MW tower system with a 15 hour thermal energy storage and three times 200 MW parabolic trough systems with more than ten hours of thermal storage. It will start operation in 2020. The plant will collect the sun during day time and charge the thermal storage. Electricity is generated by the power block in case of sandstorms or during the night using the high temperature heat out of the storage. During sunshine hours, power is produced by a 800 MW PV power plant at the same site at a contracted price of 3$cents/kWh.
