This pair of 350MW CSP projects marks the beginning of the third generation of CSP technology in China.

Each features three towers, with three solar fields and a central power block. Each has 14 hours of thermal energy storage. Each has a total investment of about 5 billion yuan (about $7 billion USD). Each will sell power at 5 yuan per kWh (7 cents USD),

Both projects are in Qinghai Province:

1.  Qinghai Yichu Golmud 350MW tower CSP project – in Wutumeiren Township, Golmud City

2. Qinghai Zhongkong Delingha 350MW CSP demonstration project – in the Delingha Industrial Park

The Qinghai Yichu Golmud CSP project will be built by Cosin Solar who invested in its development and permitting. It covers 1,373 hectares. The mirror field is 3.3 million square meters. The project’s feasibility study report was approved on April 24 this year.

The Qinghai Zhongkong Delingha CSP project will be built by Zhejiang Zhongguang New Energy Technology as investing developer. It covers approximately 1,390 hectares. The mirror field is 3.15 million square meters. The project’s feasibility study report was approved on March 14 this year.

For both projects the design will split between:

Northwest Electric Power Design Institute, of China Power Engineering Consulting Group design the key core systems and components, including multi-tower and multi-mirror field layout, heat absorption towers and heat absorption systems, distributed molten salt heat storage systems, scheduling optimization of multiple heat storage modules, and long-distance molten salt transportation.
China Energy Engineering Group, Northwest China Electrical Power Test Research Institute designs the heat storage and heat exchange, power generation units, and auxiliary systems.
