DLR researchers win ASME Best Paper Award

September 16, 2024

We are pleased to share that this year the “𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱” from the ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) goes to a team at our institute! This was announced during the 18th International hashtagConference on Energy Sustainability in Anaheim, USA. The hashtagaward aims to promote high quality research in the field of energy sustainability recognising hashtagpapers for their originality, impact, clarity, and elegance.

🖊️ Title of the paper:
“𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗟𝗮𝗯 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗢₂ 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲”

🔎 Abstract Overview: In order to achieve Net Zero hashtagEmissions by 2050, a reduction of 4 % of hashtagCO₂ emissions is needed by 2030 on the hashtagcement sector. On the other hand, the demand of cement is projected to increase by 12-23 % by 2050. To overcome this dilemma, the integration of hashtagCarbon hashtagCapture and Utilization (CCU) and Calcium Looping (CaL) is a promising and sustainable alternative. In this study, the focus is on the hashtagcarbonation step of the CaL process. The paper introduces a lab scale hashtagcarbonator for CO₂ capture with CaO particles, as part of results of the previous CALyPSOL project. CO₂ capture efficiencies ranged between 64 and 82 %, showing the feasibility of the reactor designed.
