At the 4th SFERA-III Doctoral Colloquium and Summer School, around fifty young researchers from all over the world met in Cologne from 11 to 15 September 2023. 🎓 Doctoral students from the Institute of Solar Research and the Institute of Future Fuels exchanged expertise with their European colleagues and made valuable contacts.

On behalf of the host DLR institutes, Prof. Dr Robert Pitz-Paal welcomed the participants to the DLR premises at the Cologne site. In addition to the two DLR institutes, scientists from the following research institutions were represented: CIEMAT-PSA (Spain), IMDEA Energy (Spain), ETH Zurich (Switzerland), Centre national de la recherche scientifique (France), Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi / Middle East Technical University (Turkey), Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE (Germany) and the Universidade de Évora (Portugal).

The event featured exciting presentations and discussions on topics such as solar systems, solar optics, solar water treatment, solar fuels and solar receivers. 🌞 An accompanying Summer School addressed the topic “Smart CSP: How Smart Tools, Devices, and Software can help improve the Design and Operation of Concentrating Solar Power Technologies” and was aimed at a broad audience from science and industry.

Participants also had the opportunity to visit DLR research facilities in Jülich and explore Cologne’s old town.
